The cinema opened in 1937. It was previously a monastery occupied as early as 1267 by Franciscans or grey friars. A hunched figure has been spotted sitting in the stalls which promptly disappeared.

Hamilton Stud lane in Newmarket is haunted by the ghost of the famous jockey Fred Archer who rode his first race when 12 in 1869, He committed suicide when he was just 29.Soon after his death a local woman reported seeing Fred Archer riding down Hamilton Stud Lane and the disappering into thin air.
