The ghosts of two eloping lovers haunt Borely Rectory in Essex UK.
The legend goes that a nun living nearby in Bures convent fell in love with a monk from the monastery that pre-dates the site. On discovery of their plans to escape they were captured.
The monk hanged and the nun was bricked up alive in the walls of the vaults beneath the rectory.
Their ghosts have haunted the site ever.
This abbey was constructed in 1180 for the White Canons. In 1540 Henry VIII granted the abbey and lands to Sir John Gate, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Sir John’s ghost tells the story.
There are a few reports of a ghostly serving girl who once worked at the hotel who still walks along the corridors. A boy is also seen at the rear of the building – during a fight, he was pushed under a horse in the stable which trampled him to death. Finally, Matthew Hopkins is said to make the occasional appearance.
The area is haunted by the sounds of crashing WWII aeroplanes, shouting airmen, and other noises.
An aging ghostly figure has been observed in the vicinity of the fountain.
Saint Annes castle dates back to the 12th century. The pub is associated with the legend of a local witch, Ann Hughes, who was executed in 1621 and buried at the crossroads with a stake through the heart and a heavy boulder on top of her grave to stop her spirit escaping. She is said to haunt the pub.
Located in a well hidden part of the grounds, the well was build for a beautiful woman named Charlotte. She is said to have loved the well so much that she could never leave it, and has been seen since her death in the area of the bathing pool.
1911 – On different occasions, three soldiers were struck unconscious by an unknown force at night. Many years later, a corporal witnessed a door being banged so hard it shook – he flung the door open moments after hearing the sound, but no one stood behind it. This happened several times in quick succession.
In the late 1800’s the reverend Harry Bull, a descendant of the Waldegraves, built a new rectory on the site of the old monastery. It was at this point, paranormal activity began to occur.
A Nun is said to roam the grounds, having tried too elope in the 13th century because she fell in love with a monk. According to legend, the nun and monk were caught in their get-away horse and carriage. The monk was subsequently hung and the nun walled in a section of the rectory, whilst still alive.
